Within the Second Donor Coordination Conference for the Development of the Civil Protection System in Georgia, conference participants facilitated discussions focused on the institutional development and technical support for the Emergency Management System and developed a joint view of the disaster risk reduction agenda. Furthermore, in order to develop the Emergency Management System, the conference attendees received information and discussed the challenges within the institutional development process of the field, identified the needs and necessary means for the successful implementation of this process. The conference was attended by the representatives of leading donor organizations, accredited embassies and state development agencies.

The event was organized by the Association Rural Development for Future Georgia (RDFG) Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) center, within the USAID Zrda Activity in Georgia. The initiative aims to support the development of the following institutions: The Emergency Management Service of Georgia, 112 of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and the Emergency Situations Coordination and Urgent Assistance Center of the Ministry of IDPs, Labour, Health and Social Affairs.

Within the conference, the opening speeches were delivered by Vano Grigolashvili, Association Rural Development for Future Georgia (RDFG) Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) center Chairman, Nino Javakhadze, the Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs of Georgia, Giorgi Arsoshvili, Director of joint Operations Center of 112 of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Avtandil Talakvadze, the Head of the Emergency Situations Coordination and Urgent Assistance Center of the Ministry of IDPs, Labour, Health and Social Affairs and Ketevan Chumburidze, Deputy chief of Party, USAID Zrda Activity.

“Today’s event is a continuation of the RDFG DRR Center’s effort to facilitate the establishment of an effective platform for Emergency Management System reform discussions and to elaborate common approaches and bring together joint efforts of the donor community, and state and non-state actors to contribute to a people-oriented crisis management system. Another crucial aspect is to refocus from response models to proactive prevention modalities and make the necessity of DRR integration in the development agenda clearer”, – Vano Grigolashvili, Association Rural Development for Future Georgia (RDFG) Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) center Chairman.

USAID Zrda Activity is a five-year program designed to promote inclusive and sustainable economic growth in target regions. As it is impossible to support the sustainable economic development without creating safe environment, the project aims to strengthen the structures of the Emergency Management Services System and disaster risk reduction activities on the local level. Within the project, DRR activities are being implemented by the Association Rural Development for Future Georgia (RDFG) DRR Center.
