The EDKK project is designed to contribute to the poverty reduction and social inclusion for Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) in Georgia, focusing on the creation of a strong and competitive rural production, processing and marketing sector that contributes to the economic development and employment for old and new caseload IDP farmers and youth in Georgia.

Project activities include strengthening of farmers Regional Center (Extension service center) and young farmers’ centers and farmers’ unions/cooperatives, arranging demonstration farms and organizing training and consulting on business development, disaster risk reduction and climate change related issues.

Economic Development for Georgia’s Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) through Greenhouses

The overall goal of the project was to improve livelihoods and economic conditions of IDPs and local residents in 2008 conflict effected area. Three greenhouses compiling modern standards were constructed in the targeted area serving at the same time as demonstration plots in modern greenhouse technologies within the association’s Farmers Field Schools (FFS). The FFS provided farmers with capacity building opportunities in modern agricultural technologies through trainings, agronomic services, demonstrations and practical exercises for project beneficiaries in three villages. The project also encompassed free distribution of high productivity, early harvest tomato seedlings to nine hundred beneficiaries.

The overall goal of project was to increase awareness about the natural hazards at schools and provide information about disaster risk reduction measures. The following aspects of the disaster risk reduction were introduced to the project beneficiaries, teachers and students from 17 targeted schools: stages of mitigation and preparedness for disasters. In addition to these, the sessions on simple early warning systems at schools, roles of the school’s youth clubs in reduction of disaster risks, awareness raising about environmental protection, supporting implementation of disaster risk reduction measures and preparedness for disasters at schools were provided. DRR reading book/materials and introduction to Early Warning Systems was developed and issued for targeted beneficiaries;

RDFG was contracted to assist World Vision Kakheti Area Development Program (ADP) to provide an assessment for identification of project beneficiary farmers and local schools for establishment of demo plots. For identified beneficiaries RDFG provided demo plot  specific training and organized an exchange visit Kakheti ADP community farmers and school students to the RDFG demo plots and Young Farmer Centers  and arranged the discussions the association’s beneficiaries. RDFG Farmers Field Schools (FFS) specialists provided a continuous capacity building to establish and run the demo plots as well as facilitated organization of seasonal school vegetable fairs.

On the other hand, the project aims to assist national education and emergency management authorities in further development/strengthening of DRM systems and respectively reflect of internationally recognized standards/methodologies in national level polices. The project is implemented in close collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia and the Emergency Management Agency of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

The overall objective of the proposed intervention was to contribute to the increased resilience and reduced vulnerability of children and communities in areas prone to natural hazards. The specific objective of the project was to increase knowledge and capacity of children and education authorities in 10 pilot schools in hazard prone areas to better prepare for, mitigate and respond to disasters. Within the project  the  following activities were carried out:   School Disaster Management Boards in targeted schools were established,  DRR/DM trainings for the targeted school representatives were dilivered,  School Disaster Management Plans were developed, youth DRR summer camp was organized for 40 participants from targeted schools. Also it was advocated for adoption of developed common tools, such as school DMP templates and respective instructions by the respective line ministries.

On the other hand, the project aims to assist national education and emergency management authorities in further development/strengthening of DRM systems and respectively reflect of internationally recognized standards/methodologies in national level polices. The project is implemented in close collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia and the Emergency Management Agency of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

This assessment was undertaken by RDFG in seven villages of Mestia Municipality by the request of ACF South Caucasus Mission within DG ECHO funded “Strengthening Community Resilience to Natural Disasters In Abkhazia and Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti, Georgia” project. About 124 interviews were undertaken in pre-identified by ACF communities and Mestia Municipal Center.The main objective of the assessment was to provide a comprehensive and in depth analysis of livelihoods practices, opportunities, strengths, and weaknesses in the selected ACF project communities in Samegrelo Zemo Svaneti, which are important to the communities’ resilience, effective resource management, and economic planning. The Assessment report was formulated in a way that would be easy to disseminate to communities, municipalities and other relevant stakeholders.

The project aimed to provide nine days training in Light Search & Rescue (LSR) Operations and conduct emergency simulations and evacuation drills for ACF beneficiaries in eight targeted communities with the purpose to form and equipe the Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT).
